| | | National Trust: photography persecution UK National Trust - Crackdown on photography - Luminous Landscape Forum
I'm not sure where this thread should really appear, or indeed whether the topic has cropped up elsewhere as I'm new to this site, but the above thread on Luminous Landscape outlines some severe restrictions imposed by the National Trust on the use of photographs taken on sites within its remit. This includes landscapes as well as buildings!
The LL thread has unfortunately attracted quite a few knuckle-draggers (guess the nationality...) however the issue raised strikes me as an extremely serious curtailment of basic liberties.
The National Trust needs to be swamped by protests over this I think.

| | | Re: National Trust: photography persecution They already charge a not inconsiderable subscription for the privilege of becoming a member, they further charge for parking at many of their sites, and the prices at their various gift shops & restaurant's etc. are not exactly cheap.
I have previously been a member of the NT, but if they are intending to implement and enforce this ridiculous clause, I would never consider becoming a member, and would never buy from any of their many outlets again.
They are seriously in danger of alienating the very public who keep them funded.
Regards
Mike.

| | | Re: National Trust: photography persecution Is there an active campaign by email or other means to put pressure on them? I was unaware of this until today and I suspect many other interested parties are equally unaware. This needs more publicity.
How about a sticky on the top levels of these forums?

I'm being facetious of course - but making the point that this going to be a very hard issue to police and implement - all of us that are aware are going to make sure we only take photographs while standing just off 'their' land ......... I for one - and I hope not the only one - will withdraw my standing order to their subscription .... and I could imagine the scenario where people will do damage whilst on their land in retaliation for this ridiculous scheme. We soon won't be able to do anything in this country - including breathe ......... I'm getting annoyed again and its not good for my blood pressure ........

It means that you can take photo's on their land, but you would be subject, (if they chose to enforce the clause), to potential legal action if you published the image.
And publishing would include uploading to any website, (including WAB, or your own Lancashire Nature sites for example).
The clause embodies a sort of catch all typical legal-eagle's usage of words, and will undoubtedly cause many people to find themselves in breach.
Whether they get away with it is another matter - I'm tempted to think that they will, as it is their land, and they can enforce any regulations they like.
Morally, it's another matter, and they would do well to give serious thought to the harm this will do to their relationship with the general public.
Regards
Mike.
