Geotagging Photographs

Since getting a GPS I've started geotagging the bulk of my photos. This involves adding the geographic co-ordinates of where the photo was TAKEN FROM to the image file. I thought others might be interested in some of the options.

I use a Garmin etrex and use it to log my tracks (usually on 1 point every few seconds). I then use freeware software called Geosetter (http://www.geosetter.de/en/) to assign latitude and longitude to the photos from the GPS tracks saved in the .gpx format. Basically it aligns the timestamps between the camera and the gps track, although there are other techniques. You can overwrite or save copies of the images with the geotag EXIF data.

If you don't have a GPS, and want a cheaper option, then you can buy a GPS Data Logger (e.g., Amod AGL3080) which just logs tracks without all the other fancy stuff in the GPS. The Amod comes with its own software to assign the geotags to the images.

Of course you can buy a camera with integral GPS: but I'm a cheapskate!

I used to do this with my Magellan GPSr when wandering around the Brecon Beacons (same principle but different app, I think). But since I already knew where I was and the software was pretty clunky, I gave up!
