Advanced editing tutorial - may be worth a look
There are many free photo editing tutorials on the internet but I have just seen one that may be worth a look. It was recommended on a photo forum site that I use. The Light's Right Studio Web Site

Haven't had a proper detailed look yet but at first glance it appears to go into relatively easy explanation of professional effects. (The more sensible techniques that is).
