| | | 7D firmware update warning. Anyone with a 7D thinking of updating their firmware? Don't do it!!
I did yesterday. The update went OK. The problems started when I next used the camera. ERR message, "camera can't function, please remove the battery and re-insert."
It'll take a few shots and then it happens again.
The firmware used was 1.2.5.
I've reported it to Canon and asked them for a link back to the original firmware. |

| | | Re: 7D firmware update warning. Thanks for the warning.
I did once try to do a firmware update with my old 40D but the procedure outwitted me - OK, so maybe that isn't too difficult to achieve.
Incidentally, just out of interest, I had a look at one of the adverts alongside this thread to compare current 7D prices; and found a staggering £1,000 difference between the best and worst.
The cheapest is the same price that I paid last November, so I'm still happy. |

| | | Re: 7D firmware update warning. I've been using 1.2.5 since last April without any problems, so it may be worth reinstalling it.
I've found a note on the Canon site saying you cannot roll back from the 1.2.5 update.
Good luck. Hope you get it sorted. |

Good luck. Hope you get it sorted. | Yes your right, it can't be rolled back. I've done a fresh download and tried again. It now gives an Err30 message, which point to the shutter having failed.
What bugs me is that until that upgrade my camera was just fine, no sign of any problems. Looking at the Canon forum I'm by no means the only person to suffer this problem, straight after a Firmware upgrade. The only reason I did the upgrade was because Canon sent me a link to it!
The camera is now packed up ready to be sent for repair. That makes two failed Canon shutters from three cameras in five years.
Not very impressive Canon. |

As someone who is moving over to canon from sony what can I expect from the 7D? Any advice or tips you can offer will be welcome.
Thanks

| | | Re: 7D firmware update warning. How well you get on with the 7D will, in many ways, depend on exactly what you try to photograph; and of course, the quality of your lenses.
From a purely personal view, I have found some of the options a little confusing, and difficult to remember all the different adjustment options.
But I have finally managed to disable or reduce most items which I don't really need so it now operates much the same as my previous 40D; but with slightly increased quality.
If you have a search around amongst the previous posts you will find quite a lot of information about using the 7D. |

You can then still use your Minolta lenses. 'Snake' has a later Sony than yours and takes excellent photo's with it. I get the impression that there are a few on this site that seem to struggle with their 7Ds.

Jim | Snake is not a prolific poster, I suspect he could post stuff from a Box Brownie and it would still be good.

| | | Re: 7D firmware update warning. A quick update on that initial problem.
The camera went in for repair. Ended up having a new shutter and a new PCB fitted.
When I got the camera back there appeared to still be a fault. The camera refused to AF correctly. I then got a communication error message.
I contact the repairer and they told me to send it back again. However, another message came up and this time it said there was a battery error.
I changed the battery and all the functions seemed to be working. Went out today and shot over 600 shots without any other problems so I'm not going to send it back.
So I'm left wondering if it was a battery problem all the time.
Just as a point of interest, it was the original Canon battery. |

I hope things are trouble-free and you begin to relax and use the camera and trust it to work
