| | | Canon 70-200/70-300 ? Got about £350 to spend as a result of birthday donations last week , have a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 & Canon 400mm f5.6L and nothing in between .
Was thinking about a s/h 70-200 f4L non is which seem to go for around £350 , and then saw the Canon 70-300 f4/6.6 is for about the same new.
Anyone any experience of these lens , the 70-200 f4 appears to be well regarded .
Just for info have a 7D/Manfrotto 190B Tripod and a 222 Ball head .
TIA

Lookoing at the Camera body you have, I would go for the s/h 70-200. This is an L series lens therefore the optics will be superior than the 70-300.
Hope this helps. |

No problem, actually what I also meant to add, is that I use the 50D which is a 15mp camera therefore the 7D has even greater resolving power. This means that it is capable of exposing any flaws in the optical quality of the lens which maybe more apparent in the 70-300 than the 70-200.
By the way, thanks for the message in my guestbook, much appreciated.
regards

| | | Re: Canon 70-200/70-300 ? 70-200 f4 hands down. I got one and it is Great. Forget the Hype on that 70-300 as it's what I said "Hype" and not worth the extra expense.
Plus you can attach a 1.7 converter to the 70-200.
Go buy one soon. |

| | | Re: Canon 70-200/70-300 ? I would say hang on a minute, Julian.
That 70-200 doesn't have stabilisation and isn't exactly a bargain secondhand at that sort of price. The best offer I can find new is only £470 Canon 70-200mm EF f4L USM
So I think it's time for a bit more thinking.
If you were comparing the 70-200 with IS which I use, I would say it is a truly excellent lens, providing 200 mm is sufficient for your needs.
So will a lens without IS be suitable for you? If you always shoot with a tripod or at a shutter speed above 1/250 you shouldn't have any problems.
The 70-300 is a good lens for the price and includes IS. I purchased my 70-200 IS to replace this lens which was getting a bit elderly, but still use it sometimes. Unfortunately, the 70-200 IS sells for more than least twice the price.
Admittedly, any Canon 70-200 L will give excellent results providing you are happy without IS, but is it worth purchasing secondhand when the new price isn't that much more?
And will 200 mm be sufficient? Well I suppose this lens will take a 1.4x converter without any serious problems, which would give you 280 mm approx. I wouldn't add one to the 70-300. |

| | | Re: Canon 70-200/70-300 ? Good points raised Geoff , I very nearly pulled the trigger on a s/h 70-200 f4L 2009 make this morn at £350 ( which seems to be the going rate ) , but some research showed it going through 4 previous owners in 2 yrs so I refrained.
Just tonight I had been looking at new prices and best I found was around the £465 mark ( ebay ).
Not desperate for reach as I have a 400 5.6L plus a 1.4 extender and would prob use the 70-200/70-300 hand held ( lighter weight for walk about ) and tripod where required , I am leaning to the L lens as every where I research there are many positive reviews , it was just that the 70-300 is caught my eye at a new price within my budget.
Dont want to make an expensive mistake , so bit more thinking as suggested.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

Can be had for about £320 with 5 yr warranty , anyone any knowledge or is it best to stick to Canon.
