For Captured Raptures my 400 f4.5 was too large. Used my 70-200 in the end.
Put your Sigy to about 200/250mm and you should be ok.

But I missed several because I was quite close and by the time this lens locked onto them it was too late. I did better previously with the cheaper 70-300 lens.

I haven't had the opportunity to use my 50D/150-500mm combination on 'in flight' subjects yet and I haven't done much BIF shooting at all, but back to the aircraft shooting, my best results have been using aperture priority (with exposure compensation dialled in if required) with manual focus focussed to a 'hyperfocal' distance. This would allow you to keep the 'sweet spot' of the 150-500mm lens and avoid auto-focus hunting completely.

Might be worth firing a batch off using that method.
