| | | Canon 1100D My girlfriend is thinking of buying a new DSLR and wants to get a Canon. She has found the 1100D and is considering buying it. However I told her to hold off and said I would look into it as she has not looked at reviews etc. I know more about Nikon so thought I would ask on here what people thought about it. She is new to photography and does not need a higher end DSLR so an entry model is fine. However I know the 550D is good and is not much more in price. Price is £400 on Amazon with kit lens, so any rivals around that price range would be good to know. I look forward to hearing peoples opinions on it! |

The main conclusion is (if you don't want to read it all):
"The Canon EOS 1100D is a solid entry-level performer but doesn't offer anything out of the ordinary. The image quality is decent, it's easy to use and beginners will find their way around the user interface pretty quickly. However, competition in the entry-level market is fierce and it is worth having a closer look at other options as well."

| | | Re: Canon 1100D Surprisingly I find the High Street cheaper than the river for dslr cameras (think j).
I have a Sony and they start at £329 for the cheapest model with a lens (steadyshot is built into the camera not the lens [unlike nikon & canon] so all the lens available have it - big advantage I think (but then I would ) )
Like Jim says reviews are best as nikon users like Nikon etc......
The newer Sony cameras are quite small compared to others so may be better for the smaller female hand (lighter too but thats an advantage for us all )
Good luck!

| | | Re: Canon 1100D Thanks for your advice and help everyone. I think she should go for either Canon or Nikon because she wants to save up and buy a macro lens and I know that they are the two best brands for lenses. So I think others like Sony are a no go. I use Nikon and know Nikon better but she has used Canon before and liked it so I think I will look into Canon ones. It does seem like the 1100D is a decent entry level model. I just wonder how well it would perform with a decent macro lens on it. |

Agreed there are lots of lenses for Canons and Nikons, but they vary greatly in quality - from 'coke bottle bottom' to high quality. You need to be very careful.
It's often stated that the best quality primes are to be found in the Pentax range, and the best zooms in the Olympus range.
