I note a well known IT Supplier has increased their prices almost daily since the terrible flooding in Thailand.
A typical Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII was selling for about £38 a month ago and is now a whopping £212.63 
I'm glad I bought in bulk earlier this year ... in a rash moment of madness may I add

Prices go up and down all the time on things like that, but I've not known it to jump by that much before!
It must be an error as most other places selling that model are much cheaper: Hard drive

Try Scan.co.uk the model you mentioned is £96 inc VAT at this moment.
( SATA II - 1TB - 3TB - Scan.co.uk) Their top price is for a WD 2TB @ £239 inc. Don't bother with all these so called cheaper suppliers. Use Scan or Overclockers as their prices are reasonable. Delivery times are excellent too!

Blimey, looks like I got in just in time. I bought two 2TB Western Digital drives from Amazon on 11 October for £59.73 each. Amazon have still got them in stock but they're now £99.99 each.
I still can't quite believe I have a home PC with 6 terrabytes of attached storage. And I still want to upgrade the external disks to bigger ones! That can wait until the price comes back down.

I did the same Dave - well actually I bought three WD 1 terras - one apiece and one for the new lappy! And for round about the price you paid: and now you can't buy one for that let alone three - goodness! Its not often I do the right thing at the right time and get a good deal

given that hard drives are apparently increasing in price, thought I would pass this cautionary note on ,
having had three drive failures with 1tb drives in a short time (2x Seagate & 1 x wd) I thought I would pass this cautionary note on ,
it seems that the 1tb and larger drives produce much more heat than their smaller counterparts, and when installed in close proximity in the usual pc case hd cage, there is not enough airflow passing over them to keep the temperature down to safe working limits,
I had 4 itb drives mounted one above the other, and three of the 4 failed totally, and the 4th has developed lots of bad sectors, and is now showing an "imminent drive failure" message,
since fitting replacement drives, I have installed an extra front mounted fan, which blows a small gale over the drive cage, relocated two of the drives to empty cd drive bays, and fitted twin fan coolers to each of the four new drives,
so where before you could hardly bare to touch the drives, they are all running much cooler, and should (hopefully) last a lot longer than the 3 to 4 months life span of the others, and should soon be finding a new home in my new tower, which has lots of drive space and extra cooling fans fitted, and with drive bays for ten hard drives, i should be able to keep them well spaced apart,

I don't think the Thailand component of the price rise will go away soon, Just spoke to my Bro, he was not expecting to be flooded but now he is, on a 20 km flattish road he has rising water, he does not expect it to recede in the next month. He is quite happy, all solid floors and he goes up country to stay with the family till it goes down, but downloaded Bangkok Post says industrial estates will be back working in the new year, so that is from Jan to Dec.

there's still some reasonably priced drives out there you just have to avoid the computer retailers and have a look round the supermarkets
tesco were doing samsung 750 gig 2.5 inch portable drives for £49 in store although i can't find reference to them online
there also still doing the hitachi xl 1tb external drive for 67 quid Hitachi XL 1 TB Desktop External Hard Drive - Tesco.Direct
at the rate computer retailers are banging up their prices these seem like pretty good deals | | | |
