I got a 400 f5.6 on my 7D and I hand hold all the time.

Never lugged a tripod round yet all day and dont intend to start now , just for occasion use when set up in at home in garden.

A bean bag is not always a 'good alternative'. In fact it is quite limited as it requires something to rest it on and that isn't always available.
Like several other WAB Members I use a monopod in +90% of the time when photographing birds/wildlife. I find the extra weight of a monopod is negligible and would never venture out without it.
