iv'e had a canon 50d since launch and yes noise can be a bit of an issue above 500 iso so i tend to stick below 500 to try and combat it
one thing i did notice is the noise seem'd to be worse at the same iso settings with cheaper lenses
iv'e no idea why this would occour it just did
an example of this was i used to use a sigma 170 - 500mm lens for most of my wildlife shots which if kept below 425mm would give me some quite good results but when i finally moved on to a canon 300mm F4 L with a 1.4x canon teleconverter which give me pretty much the same focal length ( 420mm ) the noise at the same iso settings was pretty much negligable
i havn't worked out the reason why i know the image quality is better so maybe there's more information being registered because of the better glass which is masking noise ?? something i'm not sure about
the 50d is a great camera and iv'e had some fantastic results with it
ive had a few of the canon bodies over the years starting with the 300d and onto the 350d then the 450d which are all pretty much the same if you ignore the pixel count
i also had the 40d which i finaly sold not too long ago ( purchased a couple of months before the 50d ) which was better at handling noise than the 50d and to be honest there's not a lot of difference between those two
i replaced the 40d with a 5d mk1 which really is a pleasure to use but not much use for wildlife being full frame unless i could afford a 600mm prime ( i can't

)
don't worry about the noise issue too much it's better to slightly under expose with a lower iso than to correctly expose at a high iso the under exposed image ( if not too far gone ) gan be brought back with post proccessing and i think the results are better than trying to get rid of noise which tends to soften the image a little to much sometimes
