| | | Tip for Canon 100-400L IS - tricky lens hood I have read several references to difficulty encountered when putting the lens-hood on the lens. I too, occasionally had problems but I have solved them. I sprayed a little WD40 onto a kitchen roll and wiped the mount of the lens hood and lens taking care of course not to touch the glass. It is now really smooth.
NB Don't spray the WD40 directly onto the hood or lens!

| | | Re: Tip for Canon 100-400L IS - tricky lens hood working a fine graphite pencil arround the thread (on the lens as this is clearly impractical on the hood) will lubricate it sufficiently without running any risk of getting anything on the glass
