eeyore recommended 'small things big' by Paul Harcourt Davies. I have just bought a copy for £3.99, reduced from around £16 because of undetectable damage (found it through Amazon). The book seems excellent so far, is fairly up-to-date (2003) so gives good coverage of digital photography. The appendix on optical theory even goes into circles of confusion, which I can't remember much about from my undergrad optics reading (long time ago).
