| | | Re: Any Nikon D7000 users please? Kent Yeti,
I said before that I don't bother about the last pixel of sharpness and am very happy using very flexible lenses that are always with me - that way I get photos because the lens is on the camera.
Now at the risk of being dragged over the coals by the real technos I thought I'd put up a couple of pictures that are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. So I checked out my photos made with my worst camera (the 6MP D40) and also made with the 18-200 nikon when set at 200mm - where it is at it's worst - and also at 100% crop so every wart can be seen. Now these aren't perfect by any means but they are from the same lens - one picture taken from about 18 inches and the other from about 30 yards away both yaken at 200mm. I settle for the compromised picture quality in return for getting a picture in the first place. If however your image quality is not at least as good as these then it will be technique rather than equipment that is the problem. DO bear in mind however that if light isn't good you may be suffering from camera shake and motion blur at the settings you are using.

I am getting some very clear and sharp images of close up static subjects in clear sunshine, including using the TC 14E11 with the 300mm f4
And I've got a few decent bird in flight shots now. Posted one of a Heron in flight yesterday on the Gallery. Changed my technique to get that. Half hid myself behind the woodwork of a footbridge over a dyke and got the Heron almost full frame before it saw me and turned away very fast. But I still managed to get the shot.
Did reasonably in poor light tonight with Sheppey's Short Eared Owl. Again a change in technique. Stayed in the car, and the bird did come closer. Far from easy to take the photos with badly restricted movement and a number were lost as I couldn't move the camera easily to keep focus on the bird.
And it is focus where I think a lot of my problems lie with birds in flight. Working on that most days now and am seeing some improvements. But a long way to go. Never get these problems with steam locos! LOL!
So I think for the present I'm going to hold back on the D7000. And work hard on improving my birds in flight results with the D80/300mm F4 combination. Stationary subjects are not a problem.
