| | | Canon 14XEF II 1.4x Extender I've ordered the Canon 7D and the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens.
Has anyone tried the Canon 14XEF II 1.4x Extender with this combination? Please be as non-technical as you can, because I'm not that well versed on the intricacies of photography (I'm learning, though!)
Is it worth doing? It's within my budget, so the cost isn't an issue. I want to know (a) will it work and (b) will the degradation in image quality be significant?
Is there anything else I need to worry about when using it? |

| | | Re: Canon 14XEF II 1.4x Extender Canon converters only work with a few Canon lenses due to their shape but I think that lens is one of the acceptable versions.
Any converter or extension tube will cause some problems in loss of light and a slight degradation of the image due to the extra glass of a converter. However, most people seem to find that the trade off is worthwhile if you really need extra magnification; and you can't simply move closer.
But you may find problems with auto focus and have to use manual focus instead. |

| | | Re: Canon 14XEF II 1.4x Extender I have the Canon 7D and 100-400, and also the Canon 1.4 tc.
The combo does work provided you use a tripod and manual focus. I have only tried this in my back garden and not in the field. I don't usually take my tripod with me as I don't drive and usually walk a circuit of around 6 miles; and weight is a consideration.
I have taped the pins on the tc and the AF worked reasonably well in good conditions using a 40D. The 7D is more demanding and less forgiving.
