| | | Re: Dead shutter? worst possible timing Well here's a lesson.
I ended up paying out £294 for a new shutter from an approved Nikon repair centre. As my camera was bought in 2008 I didn't think to bother to ask them if they would look at it anyway, I just bit the bullet.
Anyway, I decided to check my actuation count and it failed at 19500ish. Really really poor. I decided to phone Nikon support and they confirm that the D300 is tested up to 150,000 actuations. My camera is extremely well looked after, seems I got one of the duff ones that fails just outside warranty.
Nikon - if you read this feel free to get in touch, I did get it repaired through your authorised centre and have all receipts and paperwork, perhaps a goodwill gesture wouldn't go amiss.
For anyone else - go to the manufacturer first even if it's out of warranty - you never know - they look on a "case by case basis".
I should be happy to have my camera back but I just feel...annoyed..grrrr

TobyH | Might be worth contacting them. After all if its advertised for 150,000 actuations it may fall fail of false advertising laws. Also it may qualify under fit for purpose EU laws too. Worth a go! |

| | | Re: Dead shutter? worst possible timing The life expectancy is an estimate. It's not a guaranty that it will go for 150,000.
A lot of shutters will fail before the expectancy, some will go on after. |

The worst that can happen is a letter saying "No we can't help". But they might say "Oooops, sorry, here's a cheque for the cost of repairs plus 50% for the inconvenience. Happy Nikoning" Go for it!

| | | Re: Dead shutter? worst possible timing Sometimes we all cave in too soon. A product must be fit for purpose and manufactures can't get out of this by placing limited warranties on them.
No one can claim that it should be your responsibility and liability if it fails after only 19500 actuations, and within a couple of years. A camera that cost this much should be expected to last for many trouble free years, and there in is your possible response to them.
Quote them that fact that goods must be fit for purpose and a shutter failing so soon should not have happened.
To be honest, you have only done what I did. I paid for my shutter to be repaired without trying to get it done for free. Mind you mine had done many many more than 19,500! |

| | | Re: Dead shutter? worst possible timing i'm sure under EU law that an item such as an expensive camera would be warranted for six years as it would be expected to last for at least six years
now here's the catch...
the fault has to be known from manufacture and by the sound of it it is
you have to get a detailed engineers report outlining the fault.
because you had it repaired by an aproved repair outlet you'll have one
the warranty is with he place of purchase not the manufactures
you would most likely have to threaten legal action but if it was to go that far you would win
or....
under EU law goods bought in the uk have a warranty for 2 years not the 12 month they would like you to believe
but...
after six months it is now down to you to prove the fault is dodgy workmanship with an engineers report
before six months are up it's down to the seller to prove it's not a warranty issue
something like that anyway | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
