| | I've killed my lens! Thought I'd have another go at getting shots of a Jay in the snow this morning, but while I was setting up my tripod went over backwards onto paving slabs with the camera and 80-400 mounted on it. I didn't see it happen but it looked like it was the back of the camera that took the blow as it was lying with the lens pointing at the sky. I thought I was going to find the rear LCD screen smashed when I picked it up but it wasn't. The clip-on plastic screen protector broke (replacement already ordered at £8.99) but apart from that the camera seems fine. The 80-400 however is a long way from fine. The zoom cam is shot and it won't change aperture either. I've logged a claim with the insurers but won't hear from the claims dept. until Monday or Tuesday. Whatever happens I'll be without it for the mince pie meet.
I managed to get this shot with the 150 macro...
...and I'll probably try again with that lens and maybe the 1.4x TC tomorrow.

| | | Re: I've killed my lens! Sorry to hear about that Dave must be very galling.
I was all geared up today with camera gear on back including spare lenses, 7D with Sigma 150-500mm hanging around my neck and binoculars. I needed to cross my local river and started inching my way across on a snow covered fallen tree! Half way across I though 'what the hell am I doing?' So I went back like an idiot. In the end I just waded across, the water was freezing but better that than going under with all my gear.
The image of your Jay is good, it'll be interesting to see how it goes with the 1.4x TC on, post one on here tommorow so I can see the effects.

| | | Re: I've killed my lens! Aah! Gutted for you Dave. Those sort of things can happen so easily and with so little warning. Well done for having some protection on the camera. Hope you get sorted with the insurance. |

| | | Re: I've killed my lens! Are you a nikonian or a canonite, dave ? - if you use canon ive got a 70-300 that i rarely use and you'd be welcome to borrow til your long lense is fixed.
(equally if you use pentax Ive also got a 400 prime left over from my film days)

I'd gladly let you have my Bigma until it gets sorted if possible.

| | | Re: I've killed my lens! Thanks for the sympathy everyone, and for the loan offers! If it's repairable Fixation's turnaround time for Nikon is only 3-4 days and if it's not then WE have got them in stock. So as long as the insurance comes through I should be back in business fairly soon, but with Christmas in the way it won't be until the New Year.
This is the third time my tripod has gone over and the first two times I got away with it. So I guess I owe the universe this one! I'll just have to be more careful in future. Quote:

Likewise John - I'd never get up to Sheffield in this weather and wouldn't want to deprive you of your lens anyway, but I'm very grateful for the thought.
