| | | nikon 300mm lens Has anyone any experience of the nikon/nikkor 300mm AFS f/4 ed if.
I have found a few reviews which give very good points for sharpness.Seems a bargain compared to the prices of 400mm and above lenses, even sounds good with converters ?
Cheers for any replies

| | | Re: nikon 300mm lens Hi Vic,
The reviews are correct. Amazingly sharp lens I used for BIF hand held shots in florida this year. Fantastic wide open too!
Again, very good with a 1.4 but AF does slow.
One piece of advice with this lens......Enjoy!
regards.

| | | Re: nikon 300mm lens Its a fantastic lens. I've had superb results both with and without 1.4 TC.
For small birds you're still only going to get pretty small images unless you're very close in.
To be honest I've found small birds really hard to photograph with anything!

It`s a great lens.I traded mine in for the AFS 2.8 and i am still wondering why i did it when the 300AFS 4 can produce the equal in many situations. It`s a lovely lens and i would certainly recommend it.See attached pic for what it can do.

| | | Re: nikon 300mm lens I use the Nikon 1.4 TC and I'm absolutely delighted with the results. Do you need the 2.8? This combination is pin sharp wide open at f5.6 with the TC attached. If I had to criticise I'd say the depth of focus is narrow with the TC wide open but I've experimented and solved that recently by shooting on ISO 400 then you can stop down to f6.3, f7.1 or f8, and increase the DoF with no real increase in noise.

| | | Re: nikon 300mm lens Depends on what you want to shoot and how deep your pockets are Vic.
With the 2.8 you have with the new nikon 2x converter a decent 600mm 5.6, af will be slower though.
For hand holding, I feel the F4 is amazing, sharp, fast AF.
