| | | Ebay AF macro extension tubes. Has anyone got any experience with the 'new generation' of macro extension tubes now available on ebay? Something like this: linky
They are a lot cheaper than the kenko ones, but do seem to still have the relevant connections. Has anyone got any comments? Do they work as well?

The one I've linked looks pretty good, it's apparently metal and has the connections, and is a lot more realistic price for something with no glass!! I'm thinking of asking for it for my b'day so I may take a punt... I'd be more confident if someone had a good experience though!

| | | Re: Ebay AF macro extension tubes. I wholeheartedly agree with nightshade. I regularly use Kenko extension tubes with my Nikon 105mm Macro lens - in fact the 36mm is almost a permanent fixture and so far (touching wood) I've not experienced any problems whatsoever. Without counting that's well over 10,000 shutter actuations with various combinations of tube length.

| | | Re: Ebay AF macro extension tubes. Well, after a lot of procrastination (not helped by the possibility of a 180mm sigma for £299 from Jessops.... false alarm!!) I took the plunge and ordered them. They arrived yesterday and, well, they seem OK.
They're solidly made. I don't think they are all metal like it says, which i will query, but they're certainly metal mounts. They're rock solid on the body and lens, meter fine, fully auto and the AF is OK, hunts a bit, but I think that's to be expected, and like most people I focus manually by moving the camera with macro at this scale anyway. When you are focussing manually on non HSM/ AFS lenses it is a bit noisy while all the 'screwdriver links' rattle around, but not a major issue.
With my Sigma 105mm macro it gives me roughly 2x mag, it works great on my big lenses to bring the focus in close (as I presume any other tube set would!)
One thing which is a bit weird is that they are lined inside with a sort of felt. Whilst I'm sure this will stop any reflections really well, I'm a bit concerned it might be a bit of a dust trap. I'll have to watch it carefully.
All in all for £60 (especially as it's a pressie ) I'm pretty chuffed, I'll be playing around now, I've got plans for some scenic frost for this years christmas card!!!
I'll keep everyone informed re long term durability...

| | | Re: Ebay AF macro extension tubes. As a quick follow up. I've noticed when using the pop up flash, or a hot shoe mounted flash, I'm over exposing by a couple of stops, presumably because the camera thinks I'm further away than I am. When using the flash off camera it's fine (which is how I usually use the flash for macro).
It seems pretty easy to correct but is this the same for all tubes?
