I’m a Nikon user, but I have heard from a friend of mine that there have been some quality control problems with the Canon 100-400.
He said that you must try your lens out in the shop before you buy it, and then make sure the one you tried out is the one you walk out with!
In other words, even though they are the same model, from the same factory, the build quality can vary between individual lenses!
Just watch out, though canon may have fixed this....still, try before you buy!

Alex | There is some quality variation in all lens models from all manufacturers though the 100-400 seems to be a little more suceptible to this than one might expect from L glass. I have never seen a "BAD" one but some are better than others. You are right - try before you buy - with any lens, perhaps more so with this one. Mine was great on 2x20d, 5d mk1, 1div and a friends 20d + 1diii. However was poor on my 50d?!? Micro adjustment did not help, the 50d was v good on my primes though. Sometimes it may be the camera not the lens?
Try all the camera shop will allow then decide.
P.S. Still prefer my 300f4 as I can equal the 100-400 (with cropping) and get a better image - though the IS is not as good.
