| | | Sigma 50-500 vs Canon 100-400 I find my Sigma 50-500 although a bit heavy a not too bad lens, even so i do get a lot of photos for the bin, So ive been pondering wether to buy the Canon 100-400, has any of you guys had both of these lenses, my question would be, the loss of 100mm, would a shot at 400mm with the canon match the same shot at 500mm with the sigma, Any advice would be appreciated thank you...Ray

| | | Re: Sigma 50-500 vs Canon 100-400 I would say the Canon 100-400 would equal if not surpass the Sigma 50-500mm. Actually the 50-500 is not 500mm it falls a little short of 500, can't remember the exact length but it's somewhere around 480 something.
If you could manage without a zoom, the Canon 400mm F5.6L USM lens will more than match either of the other two in terms of image quality. You certainly wouldn't miss the extra 100 of the Sigma with this one. Plus it's cheaper and lighter than the 1000 - 400mm

| | | Re: Sigma 50-500 vs Canon 100-400 You can also get good results with insects such as dragonflies, butterflies and spiders with the 100-400 which has a closer focus the the 400 prime. This is very useful when insects are out of reach using a macro lens.
Depends on what you want. The 100-400 is far from shabby with birds in flight.

| | | Re: Sigma 50-500 vs Canon 100-400 For proportion of keepers I use the 100-400. For absolute stunners (but more misses) I use the 400 f/5.6. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
