Decent Digital Camera for Beginner?

I've only ever owned one camera which was one of those Olympus shock and waterproof thingies. The pictures it takes ain't much cop but that could very well be down to me. I used to take it on canoeing trips but no longer as nine times out of ten my pictures are poor.

My paddling buddy uses a cheapo Fujifilm thing that seems to take decent enough photos (certainly a lot better than mine). He just points and clicks! I'm very wary about what to buy so I'd be most grateful for some advice. Not too large a beastie and no dearer than £150, please. Point and click happiness for taking the odd picture round the garden and when out and about is the order of the day.
