can any one recommend a book/guide to get the most from the camera?

had it a while and want to start pushing myself and it more and stop resorting to the automatic settings when in a rush etc

Camera make/model doesn't really make much difference to the basics, so go some of the many Photographic sites which have free tutorials.

And yes, the sooner you ditch the auto settings the sooner you will start learning. You may initially discover that you are on a steep learning curve but if you stick with it you will soon find that everything starts to make sense.

The only trouble is that once you have mastered your camera you will want to get into advanced editing; then you will want better lenses, a tripod and flash. And after that . . .
