| | | Sigma 1.4x teleconvertor compatibility i have been offered a Sigma 1.4x ex dg teleconvertor lens at quite a cheap price, however, the lens i have ( Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 dg macro) is not on the list of compatible lenses, on the Sigma web site,
can i take it that the above combination will not work ?
i have tried to find info on this, but there are some very conflicting pieces of information about the compatibility of the convertor with other lenses, some say yes, it will work while others say no,
anyone have any views on this bit of kit ?
thanks,
ashgale. |

| | | Re: Sigma 1.4x teleconvertor compatibility I'd be wary of cheap converters - they can seriously degrade the performance of every lens you use them on.

When you say, This combination will not work.
Do you refer to auto focus? If yes. Then I doubt it will work.
But it will work perfectly okay on manual focus.
In my experience. Teleconverters do not work on lens of f5.6 unless you manually focus. |

| | | Re: Sigma 1.4x teleconvertor compatibility Hi Ashgale, I think it's more of auto focus compatibility than that there might be a physical problem with connecting the two.
Is it possible for you to try before you buy?
PS Jim, the Sigma EXDG 1.4 converter is not a cheap unit.
They retail at £200.00, and are specifically designed to be used with Sigma lenses.
I use the same converter almost 100% of the time with my Sigma 180mm macro lens, and the image quality is second to none.
Regards,
Mike.
EDIT - I accept that converters aren't at their best with zoom lenses, but if it can be had for a cheap enough price, it would be worth getting in my opinion, especially if there was any intention of using Sigma primes at any time in the future.

being fairly new to photography, i am still trying to come to grips with the more technical aspects of it,
the manual focus only aspect would not be any problem for me, its just that i dont want to buy the extender, then have something that wont work with my setup,
but at the price asked, it would not be a great loss ,and it has apparently only been used a few times and looks to be in excellent condition,
so i may take a chance on it,
thanks,

ashgale. | There is nothing wrong with the Sigma 1.4 teleconvereter as well as i am aware, Ashgale
If it is in good condition, and the price is good. I would have no hesitation in purchasing it.
You are aware that it will probably only operate in manual focus. So you have nothing to lose.
Besides. The time will come when you will probably own a lens that is f.4 or f2.8 Then it will come into it's own.
If you ever purchase a macro lens. Sigma 105mm or 150mm or similar. The teleconverter will be a great aid., and work in auto focus |
