| | | Re: Camera upgrade recommendations First decent photo with this setup:
ISO 1000, f/9.1, 1/640, handheld.
(I've done careful selective noise reduction, this isn't how the ISO 1000 shot came off the camera (but it wasn't that much worse )) |

You'll be blown away by it's ability to denoise and keep detail, I guaranty.
I've just been trying it on a few ISO 3200 shots from the 40D, and it makes them look more like ISO 400-800 shots.
I usually take a few handheld shots before setting up the tripod, so I have something to fall back on. I'm glad I did in this case, because just after I shot 4-5 handheld, the wind picked up, so I wouldn't have got any shots if I'd gone to set up the tripod straight away. |

Pauline | Slightly off topic but worth a mention.
The 40D is an excellent camera for macro work and as Pauine says the 7D doesn't neccessarily beat it. In fact I would say the 40D is easier to get good macro shots with than the 7D.
I put this down to the extra mega pixels of the 7D if this makes sense. Any slight mistake on the part of the user seems to be magnified more with the 7D. Any slight camera movement when pressing the shutter button on the 7D and you can forget it you will have a blurred photo.
I find you have to be much more precise with everything with the 7D for macro work where as the 40D I could just take aim and fire and a decent shot was in the bag. However after several months of getting used to it I find the 7D is an equal to the 40D for macro and in some cases especially if you need to crop it's better.
I was dissapointed with the 7D performance for macro when I first got it but after several months of practice I prefer it to the 40D for macro. |

| | | Re: Camera upgrade recommendations I'm sure your right Roger. I've not even tried my 7D with my 150mm lens yet. I'm trying to keep lens changing down to a minimum, partly because I'm lazy!
I have used my 7D with the MP-e65, with which it's fine, in fact better as the rear screen is far clearer and with the MP-e65 using the rear screen is for me a necessity. |

The rear screen on the 7D is fantastic. I find that if the image isn't sharp at 100% on the rear screen when previewed you can forget it because once it's on your PC it definitely won't be sharp.
When I do get it right with the 7D and Sigma 150mm though they take some beating. Hope to see you soon as I start 17 days off on 20th August |

Hope to see you soon as I start 17 days off on 20th August | And I'll go one further than this at the minute - while away I was blown away by the images on the rear screen - and I really thought I had fantastic shots - but when I downloaded back here they were not as good as on the cameras screen ....... I wondered if my old PSP was not handling the amount of pixels and then thought - don't be daft - that can't be possible ...... Like you Roger as soon as I can I am going to do some test shooting and by the way have a good break coming up and look forward to the results on here!
