| | | Metz MS-1 Ring Flash I went into the woods yesterday to try out my new Metz MS-1 ring flash with the obligatory bluebell pic:
The flash is very easy to use. It's also light and the 2 AAA NiMh cells seem to last a good while and recycle quickly. I'm looking forward to trying it out on insects.
I'm not particularly fond of the dark background flash gives, but with the wind on a slender plant it's often the only way you can get a decent shot.

| | | Re: Metz MS-1 Ring Flash We made a clear plastic windbreak - a strong sheet of polythene - the good thick strong stuff and sewed slim pockets horizontally to slip thin metal rods down and into the ground - for photographing orchids in 'windy Kent' a few years ago! We've stood and sat around each other and held coats and piled up bags and rucsacs - all in an effort to break the breeze and stop the orchid from 'waving'!!
Can you adjust the power output from this ring flash? When I use on camera flash I have it set right down at -2 and I was wondering if the output from the ring could be lowered too?
It will be very good for insects tho- esp dragons and damsels .... looking forward to seeing more results Jim |

It's not really a 'ring' flash inasmuch as the flash tube is not in a ring. There are 2 separate small tubes in a diffusing ring. Altering the power to each tube gives a degree of modelling.
I've tried windbreaks but not found them very effective with tall, willowy specimens. Turbulence downwind of the windshield can make the problem worse. I've also tried supporting the plant stems, but it's all a 'faff'.
