The subject of extending a lens with a teleconverter crops up from time to time, so in spite of it being an external link, I though the above would be of interest.
There are also a lot of other useful guides on the site.

I find my 150mm macro lens works very well with a 1.4X TC, so much so that I rarely take the TC off it.
