| | | Re: Canon EOS 550D Hello.
Well over the 500d the 550d has widescreen proper 3/2 display, the video has selectable frame rates, something the 5dmk2 doesnt have, better new metering,ad more pixels, gotta say video like it or not is coming in a big way,the quality is superb,i would say yes the 550D is a nice upgrade and if i was to choose between the 2 i would go 550d.
As for the 18-200i wouldnt spend loads so maybe the sigma version with OS for about less than £300 now.in shops anyway, much cheaper on auction sites.
Anyway hope this helps.

at the mo im SLR free so open to any make and brand as no back catalog of glass to worry about, but the Canon seems to be the best for <£1k in shops at present

| | | Re: Canon EOS 550D I personally like canon more (for no particular reason) but the Nikon D5000 is supposed to be a great camera for the money as well.
Just thought it's worth mentioning nikon's offering as well |

The optical quality of the lens is by far the biggest factor in determining the quality of the final image.
When faced with the decision cheap lens plus expensive body, or cheap body plus expensive lens, you should certainly go for the latter.

Jim | by silly price i mean many £k's, as its going to be used at the bottom of the world, in the middle of winter on the roughest ocean and when not in use it will rock and roll with the ship on the high seas
