| | | Sigma 105mm macro non-dg Hi all,
I wonder if you can help.
I have got the opportunity to bag an older Sigma 105mm macro for my Nikon D90, it's the non DG version and I'm wondering if it'll be a false economy getting this over saving up for the DG. Is the difference just the lens coating? Does it really make a difference or is it all 'hype'? Has anyone used both and could comment?
Also how much would people pay for an optically and mechanically sound lens such as this with some signs of use?
Thanks in advance!

I use the Sigma 105mm macro non DG. I use it on my Canon 50D
I cant compare it with the DG version, as i have not used one. But the non DG works perfectly well. I am very happy with the results it produces.
I'm not sure what the going price of these are, second hand. But if the price is good. You wont be disappointed. |

| | | Re: Sigma 105mm macro non-dg I wouldn't hesitate to buy a non-dg version as long as the price is lower than one with dg.
Yes I think the only difference is the lens coating. Something which I tried to research before buying a 180mm non-dg a few years ago. I don't think it makes much difference at all. At least nothing that can't be made good in photoshop. Could be wrong on that though! I'm sure you won't be dissapointed if you get it.
I actually bought a Sigma 105mm DG from ebay yesterday and am looking forward to getting back into macro after selling my other lens a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately I left it too late and have missed my chance, oh well.
It's reassuring to hear the non DG lenses are still good, I'll not hesitate next time!
The search continues...

| | | Re: Sigma 105mm macro non-dg What do you wish to photograph? A 105 mm lens is fine for flowers, etc or other inanimate objects which allow you to get really close. But for insects, I would recommend going up to the 150 mm.
I've gone even bigger, 180 mm, which I like but it is a rather large heavy lens which is best on a tripod. |

| | | Re: Sigma 105mm macro non-dg I'm looking at a bit of everything at the moment! The 150mm looks good, but I'm on a bit of a budget and I think they're out of my price range....
For now I'll keep hunting for a 105mm, or possibly a Tamron 90mm, but obviously I'm then losing another 15mm. It's simply a matter of what comes up at the right price!
