| | | Re: covering your camera in bad weather? I use a simple camo Poncho so that i can drape it over the camera and lens, as well as wear it as i walk, with my equipment tucked underneath the Ponco when the weather`s wet.
It`s cheap, works and is very simple....as well as a disguise from any birds around.
I hope this helps !!
Best of luck

| | | Re: covering your camera in bad weather? I always carry a black plastic rubble sack with me. It folds up neatly for the pocket, don't notice it's there. It's quick and easy to slip over the whole rig including the head of the tripod or monopod if it starts to rain.
It may not look very elegant but it does the job and it's cheap and easily replaced as well. |

Geoff | I also generally go for the poncho option, but my good lady made me a super camouflage camera/lens cover from some spare waterproof camo fabric that we had in the back of the cupboard. Brilliant and it doesn't rustle during use.

| | | Re: covering your camera in bad weather? As others have said, a plastic bin liner serves serveral purposes! I usually carry one and, if necessary, put the camera/lens inside it with an elastic band around a slit in the bag that I poke the lens hood through.

Yes we both have camo ponchos which work really well when you are standing with the whole rigg on the tripod waiting for something to appear/reappear (we got crossbill shots last year in the isles in horizontal rain this way - looked hilarious - but I've now got crossbill in 'my stable'!) We also carry a big (wheely bin size and thicker/stronger material) black plastic bag folded small in an outside pocket of rucsac - mainly for lying on when getting down to fungi. I do tho prefer the poncho over me and the whole set up - its so easy to dodge out and leave the poncho over the camera, esp with a waterproof jacket on yourself - you can even leave it set up and go back in the van or car and operate the shutter with a long lead if you want to!

First post here and I'm on my iPhone so excuse the dodgy grammar/ spelling!!
How do people use their poncho? Do you stick the lens through the hood or just drape it like a tarp? If the former does that work well or do you find yourself restricted by only being able to see through the viewfinder?

John | The nice thing about a poncho is that it is quite informal. What suits one person can be adopted to someone elses preferences. Have a bash and see what works for you. And welcome to the site.
