| | | Shutter jamming I recently got my old olympus om10 out of mothballs, as i thought i would also try it out on lightning as i was given some free rolls of film, it works ok with the standard lens but as soon as i put my 80mm 200mm lens in, the shutter stays open like it jams, is there something wrong with the lens?
the camera batts are new thanks in advance for any help |

| | | Re: Shutter jamming That reminds me; I've got an old OM 10 tucked away somewhere.
The only thing that comes to mind is to check those little operating levers on the lens to make sure that they aren't broken or bent and jamming up.
I found the OM 10 to be particularly bad for breaking these and most of my lenses eventually failed this way. |

There is a Depth of Field Preview button on the camera. Take the lens off and you can see what it does - it moves a lever that engages with another lever on the lens to manually open the iris to the selected aperture. What has probably happened is that the zoom lens iris has jammed in the fully open position.
You might be able to move this lens lever back and forth and eventually free it off. Or you might not.
Good luck! I had years of fun with my OM10. I loved the Zuiko 28mm, as I mostly shot landscapes. |

| | | Re: Shutter jamming Captain Nodge:
The shutter on an OM 10 is electronic, so there is the possibility that the electromagnets governing the shutter cycle are in need of replacement, but that still doesn't explain why one lens works while another doesn't.
There is the possibility, as suggested, that the lens diaphragm is sticking on your 80-200 mm lens. Stop the lens down to minimum aperture and press the depth of field preview button on the side of the lens to check it snaps closed and open again. Having said that, a faulty aperture iris is not going to affect the shutter speed unless it remains closed: i.e.. sticking, which will keep the shutter open longer as the AE system tries to produce a normal exposure.
Do you have the manual adaptor fitted to the camera? Does the shutter stay open when you select a fast shutter speed manually?
It is difficult to assess the problem at this distance, but I do suspect it's a lens-related problem. Frankly, I'm surprised an OM 10 still works at all, considering its age!

| | | Re: Shutter jamming The lens in question is a prinzflex, not an olympus, trombone style zoom,
theres no depth of field preview button on it neither has the camera,
none of the levers seem distorted and seem free, hmmm? |

Oops, just dug out my OM10 and yes, the depth of field preview buttons are on the lenses, not the camera. Sorry.
Take off the lens and put the camera on "B" mode. When you press and hold the shutter release, you willl see a lever on the right side (looking into the camera body) flick upwards. This is the lever that engages with the iris stopdown lever on the lenses. My guess is that the faulty lens is somehow fouling this lever movement. It can easily be demonstrated that preventing this lever moving with your finger will prevent the shutter opening/closing properly.
Good luck. |

Prinzflex are Zenit (Russian) built cameras and lenses, rebadged for the Dixons line of photographic gear.
