which means you could download pictures quicker from your card using a firewire cardreader than one powered by USB...
however you need a high speed card to make use of it. ie the card has to be capable of the same speed as well. (about 400Mbs... most cards are only 20Mbs)
Unless you have a top end CF card, or tons of money, just use a standard USB reader

| | | Re: Firewire where the firewire capability of the 1D series is useful though is if you are doing tethered shooting (ie without a card with the images going straight to a laptop) - its not something you'd do for wildlife but its used a lot in fashion, advertising, and also some potraiture

however in my experiernce they only work well if you are the only photographer there - I tried to use this system covering a sporting event once and it was a mares nest as several different photographers using them were interfering with each others signal.
