The one criticism I will level at the D300 is its native ISO of 200. There are many times when I would like to be able to set the camera to ISO 50 for example, when doing landscape work. I rarely stop down below f/11 using a DX sensor due to diffraction, and would like a slower shutter speed for pictorial effect.
Yes, I know the camera is capable of being set to LO .3; L0 .7 and LO 1.0, but this is not the same, and faffing about with ND filters can be a pain. In the quest to get good high ISO performance the camera manufacturers have neglected the other end of the scale. Nikon, are you listening?

I must admit that I would have, or in fact did assume, that the ISO range would have started at ISO 50, ideally lower but at least ISO 100! Is the ISO lower range, any better on the full frame Nikons do you know? Not that I'm gonna part with the D300s now! Wizzo

Dave P. | Correctomundo! Why they call them that I do not know. My camera just goes from ISO 100 - ISO 6400. No fancy LO settings - but it's only a Sony

Acher | The reason they (Nikon) call it that is that 200-6400 ISO (I use the D700 as an example) is the normal working range of the camera, outside which the performance degrades. In a sense, Nikon are saying "go lower than 200 or higher than 6400 at your own risk". So nothing fancy here - just a warning from the manufacturer.
Although cameras like the D300, D700 and D3 can each go to 100 ISO (Lo 1), since this is below base ISO of 200, there is a drop in dynamic range. These bodies are all designed with low light or sports/action work in mind, hence the working ISO range starts high relatively and ends high too. In contrast, the working range of the D3x is 100-1600.
