| | | Shutter fault on my D300 I drove up to Donna Nook today with Neil (Ukwildlifeo) for the seals. It was great when we got there, lovely light, but after nearly 100 shots I suddenly started getting this...
I tried completely power-cycling the camera by taking the batteries out, resetting to factory defaults and shaking the shutter by switching back to 12 bit raw and firing 20+ shots at six frames per second. Sadly nothing worked so it looks like it either goes in for repair or I limit myself to taking panoramic shots from now on!
I'm in month 22 of a two year warranty - wonder if I'll have a fight on my hands...

It looks like shutter bounce to me, but if it is a shutter blind problem (or any other fault that's developed) Nikon should have no qualms about solving the problem if it occurred during the warranty period.
A repair by Nikon averages around 3 weeks (speaking from experience).

| | | Re: Shutter fault on my D300 Sorry to hear of the problem with your D300 Dave.
It's better that it happened in month 22 rather than month 25 though.
I hope Nikon carry out the repair for you quickly.

| | | Re: Shutter fault on my D300 Thanks All,
I've dug out all the paperwork and will be onto Nikon in the morning. With any luck I can drop it in to Fixation in Kennington at lunch time and have it back in just a week or two. Fingers crossed!
Dave P.
P.s. for wizzo - Thank you very much! Almost all my bird shots were taken with the Nikon 80-400mm VR but I usually have the VR switched off. The reason why is explained here: VR (or IS) - Is it worth it?

| | | Re: Shutter fault on my D300 That's what this will need too Colin.
I was a bit worried this morning because all the paper work I dug out yesterday said I should have been sent an extended warranty pack when registering and that I'd need this to make a claim. I haven't got it and don't remember ever receiving it. But I spoke to Nikon Technical Services thia morning and they confirmed that I did register for the warranty and have arranged to send teh necessary pack out to me.
Meanwhile I've dropped the camera off at the authorised repairers who are happy to go ahead with the work and as long as I can produce the warranty documents when collecting it they won't charge. Turnaround at present is only 4-6 working days so it shouldn't be too long before I'm back in business. I won't have any opportunities for photography this coming weekend anyway.

| | | Re: Shutter fault on my D300 The repair was completed in four days but I still didn't have the warranty pack so couldn't collect it.
All the warranty stuff is handled for Nikon by a company called Homeserve. I chased them after a week and discovered that they had only updated my records with a 12 month warranty and as that had already expired they hadn't sent me anything. They confirmed with Nikon that I was entitled to a 2 year warranty and said they'd send it out. This was two weeks ago now and I'm still waiting!
Fortunately, Nikon themselves have been very helpful and emailed the repairers to confirm that the camera is covered under warranty and I've been able to pick it up today without the warranty paperwork.
So I'm no longer the Panoramic Kid!
Anyone else who has a two year warranty please make sure you have the paper work as it might take quite some time to get it if you need it.
