There is a good comparison of the new 7D v 5D2 & D300 at high ISO on the POTN forums. Not as good but certainly giving the Nikon D300 a run for its money at 6400.

It seems from these early test photos that the 7D has a lot going for it in the low noise market on a cropped camera.... it will be interesting to see the reviews once the production bodies have been tested!

We should not forget that WAB enthusiasts [and astronomers like me!] are extremely grateful to be able to buy cameras kept affordable by mass marketing which may include features we personally don't want - the price would go up to exclude them! Because of the small market my cooled astrocams are orders of magnitude more expensive than regular DSLR using the same CCD !

NyteCam: you're correct that extra features help drive the hobby forward with lower prices for more features..

DanJeffery: as for the price consider another £200 off in 3 months time, as the prices quoted are never the same. for example the new Panasonic blu-ray recorders have gone down a lot at trade price, and this has affected the shop price.

I could yet find myself in the market for this. Just trashed my 40D with sea water in Wales (photographing seals in rough seas). If it's a write-off and the insurance pays, then maybe the 7D is just about in range (alternative would be a 50D). Plus I would like the video. I ended up taking an old S2 out for a second seal-watching trip. Having video with an eye-viewer makes all the difference. I would definitely use the video if I had it.

Mmmm! But now that canon have announced the mark 4, the possibility of the eos1d mark 3 dropping down below the 2 grand mark could well be on the cards, and to me would be a mouth-watering prospect..anybody else got any thoughts on this?

Well just to add I've now had my 7D for four weeks and shot just short of 4000 images and very pleased with the results as soon as my events business can warrant it we will be buying another two of these cameras.

My father has just splashed the cash, all £1200 of it on a 7d, and after a couple of hours playing with it I must say I am very impressed.He has had a great deal on what is going to become a great camera.

All I have to do now is get hold of it for a day and take it down the wetland centre in Llanelli for a proper play.

I am thinking of putting one on my wish list, gives the option of video. In fact looked at trading a as new 40D. A bit dissapointed on the trade in price, so it won't be happening soon
