There's a lot of expensive gear used and promoted by forum members that's way outside my price range.
For my astro-work and I suspect macro work too - zoom lenses, autofocus and autoexposure features are largely unnecessary hence my exclusive use of modest cost s/h prime lenses and tele-extenders [Barlows] via a Kood M42-EOS adapter. Kood also do lens reversing rings [that turn the lens backwards] and perform optically better for extreme close-up.
Below is a pic of my 'ancient' Canon 300D DSLR with s/h Pentax screw M42 lenses with focal lengths from 17mm to 300mm costing £20 - £40 down the years that perform well. Recently bought brand-new a screw-thread Vivitar 100-200mm f/4 zoom for just £15 and it works fine as second pic. Alternative lenses need not cost the earth unless you're totally transfixed by brand names
