| | | Anyone using a Canon SX1is on here? Hi,
I am getting a Canon SX1is Bridge Camera as a handy back up camera when i cannot get the Canon 1dmk2 ready quick enough and today I had a chance to see some shots taken with the SX1is all I can say is WOW what a little gem of a camera! My mate didn't let on whhat camera he had used until i had looked at 100+ cracking shots ranging from Red Deer to close up's of Bees flying and the quality is amazing. Anyone thinking of buying a Bridge camera then check one out before you buy another model.
Like I said my main camera is a 1dmk2 + Sigmonster etc and due to health problems I am finding it too heavy set-up to cart about hence reason for the Bridge camera so I can at least take some shots from my garden etc without any walking involved.
Another thing about the SX1is is the HD video facility saw some amazing video of a Red Kite today crystal clear due to image stabilising.
Can't wait to get mine, will let you know how I get on with it.
Does anyone else on here have the SX1is? if so would love to see more shots taken with it!
Cheers

Recent addition.
Like you, bought as addition to dSLR setup.
Proving to be very valuable - as expected electronic view-finder
and delayed action (compared to dSLR) are annoying.
I love the total silence and ability to take photos virtually unnoticed
when using the clear LCD which will point in any direction.
I have not used the HD video yet.
Must put some time aside to check the higher ISO / vs
auto ISO; haven't really worked out what is what yet.
It doesn't cope with high contrast sun/shade as well
as dSLR.
Time to read the manual!!!
Compared to my first digital (Minalta Dimage 7Hi) it is very
good about battery life, but not as good as dSLR - but with
dSLR I seldom do more than check the histogram and flashing
areas for overexposure. |

Had more bad news today been told i have Glaucoma in left eye (apparently its knackered) so more hospital visits great stuff (not) I recomend that anyone getting eye strain headaches etc get your eyes tested! I ignored it like a fool.
Cheers and look foraward to seeing some of your shots with the SX1

Got the SX1is and what a load of rubbish!!! this shot was taken on bright sunny day on full auto from 25ft just look at that noise!!!!!
As you may guess its got to go and Canon should be ashamed producing such rubbish!! its a £400 camera not a £10.00 disposable jesus
I tried lots of shots and that was the best! I know how to handle a camera so its not user error just xexexexe camera |

Can you upload the original file? |

Can you upload the original file? | Hi,
No kidding! that's the best shot. How do you copy the data?
Here's some of the settings (the camera was set at full auto on bright sunny day)
F5.7, 100mm, exposure 1/100 iso 80 shutter speed 1/101sec. does that make sense?
Before buying it i read umpteen reviews and saw quite a few images (online) but to say i was shocked is an understatement. I know my eyes are bad but even i can see these are rubbish? I have since found lots of people complaining about the noise in this model.

| | | Re: Anyone using a Canon SX1is on here? To be honest, the photo looks perfectly acceptable to me. I don't think any bridge camera will produce the same quality results as a DSLR due to the size of the sensor, but for what you are getting for your buck, zoom range, movie mode, convenience etc., bridge cameras are fantastic value for money. I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. That too has been criticised for being too noisy, or having too much noise reduction producing smudginess in some cases, especially in bad light. However, in good light, results are very good IMHO. A bit of post processing can often sort things out as well.
I'd have to spend a small fortune to get the same zoom range and functions in a DSLR, so I've not gone down that route so far. Besides, messing around changing lenses is not really for me. I've read lots of reviews about the SX1 IS and it's non-HD sibling, SX10 IS and they really aren't bad cameras, but shouldn't really be compared to a DSLR. For what they are, they are really quite good, but that's just my humble opinion and I am probably easily pleased :>)
At the end of the day, it's whatever floats your boat and there are lots of happy and satisfied people out there using bridge cameras like the FZ50 and the SX1 IS, but if you prefer DSLRs, go for it. |

i have been looking at this camera for a while based on the reviews e.g. Canon Powershot SX1 IS Review i am not surprised you are disappointed with your images, they are nothing like samples shown in the above review
the only thing i would say is that i have a compact canon point and shoot jobbie and results on full auto have been pretty ordinary for me too. i have had much better results by setting to P then adjusting the white balance and iso to as low as possible only. the camera seems to compensate well for these settings and i have had some decent results.
good luck, i genuinely hope things get better

My problem with the SX1is is its a £400+ bridge camera and it should take a decent sharp picture when set on auto at 5ft? 99% of digital will but considering the price of the SX1is its not much to ask of it?
I have £10,000's worth of digital slr's lenses but as i mentioned due to my eye/health problems i need something easier to use and lighter at the moment. As far as the above shot being fine surely your joking? either that or you need your eyes testing?LoL
I have seen some fantastic shots on here taken with bridge cameras and thought if i bought what is listed as top of the range bridge camera i would be well sorted but this is not the case.
If you do some searches on the t'internet like Amazon etc you will see many people compaining about the poor quality of the SX1is and its just not good enough.

tim | Too right i'm not happy, I will put some shots taken with my Panasonic point and shoot which are as sharp/clear as ones taken with my dslr's, I didn't expect slr quality but thought it would be better than the compact. Also I think the Canon SX1is sample images have been worked on in PS. I have a friend who works for magazine's and they told me many years ago that when they review certain items they don't actually try the real thing and just make it up and just add lots of technical stuff found on internet reviews so never trust them | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
