I know that my canon 100-400 IS says to turn off the IS on a tripod.
Though threads on WAB have suggested it isn't that important.
Perhaps it ought to be off on the SX1 too when on a tripod?? |

I assume that you have checked out the specs. but just in case - The S100FS only has 35mm equivalent of 400mm on max. zoom. (My S9600 only has 300mm). No problem for me with flowers & fungi, but if you're into long distance shots of birds etc. you might find these aren't long enough for many of your shots.
I've been getting some good reports on the Nikon P90, which (although I don't particularly like the physical looks of the camera) has a zoom equivalent in excess of 600mm. Have you considered that? I think it's about £350.00 ish.
Regards,
Mike. |

Regards,
Mike. | Hi Mike, Yes have heard about the Nikon P90 but as its just come out after the experience with the Canon I will avoid it, it may be a fine camera and certainly has some great features (your right its a very ugly camera LoL) I have seen great images taken with the Fuji's and having owned the S7000 and found it great IQ I will go for the Fuji S100fs. I'm not too bothered about it only having 400mm range because its mainly for garden use so it will be fine. I have a Panasonic FX33 which i won in a photography competition in a magazine a couple of years ago and its a fantastic little camera, it doesn't have a very long range but is wide angle and also great for Macro and also is pretty good at video function for short video clips. 8mp and a Leica lens in something the size of a packet of fags can't be bad LoL (I have also won another competition with a photo taken on the FX33 which is pretty good for a prize)?
Another thing I like about the Fuji S100fs is the remote trigger which is something all camera should have the canon SX1is has a IR remote which is fine if your facing the camera and no good if you behind it so a wired remote is better feature for myself.
Cheers

As you will see, he's just done a batch review of a number of superzoom bridge cameras, including the Nikon P90. |

Hasn't got a hot shoe
Comparisons I saw suggested that there was more detail after
cropping on the Canon that on the Nikon.
Canon also has HD video
Sound like captaincorot had a bum version. |

| | | Re: Anyone using a Canon SX1is on here? I too am a user of a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 after balking at the price of the Canon SX1, and have so far been very impressed with the quality. It is true that the pictures can be a little soft when zooming in on the PC, but a bit of careful sharpening in post processing can bring the pictures up a treat. Equally certain light conditions do present a bit of a challenge, but on the vast majority of occasions the camera comes up trumps.
I used to have a DSLR, but found myself missing too many opportunities purely because I hadn't taken the camera with me due to its size and weight. With the Panasonic I have captured so many more pictures that I would have otherwise missed.
I'd recommend giving the camera a few weeks to see how you get on. There are occasions when they are out of their depth, but for the vast majority of the time these bridge cameras are superb. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
