| | | Nikon D40 I have bought my first dslr and am already addicted ! I am a complete amateur and would love to be able to photograph the deer that regularly spend all day in the field opposite our house - what sort of lense do I need... I have 18-55mm. The subject is too far away to make a good photo. what does anyone suggest ? thanks |

As a newcomer to the great world of DSLR's, and since you already have the 18-55mm, I would suggest that a good additional lens would be a 70-300mm.
The two lenses would then give you a very good overall range of focal lengths for your photography.
You might consider purchasing more specialist lenses, (such a dedicated macro, or long focal length prime lens), at some future time, when you are more familiar with DSLR photography.
You also need to consider the nature of your subjects, and whereabouts you will be positioned in relation to those subjects when taking the photos.
Good luck with your camera, the D40 is a nice (and well respected) piece of kit.
Regards
Mike. |

What is your budget and what else would you like to photograph? |

| | | Re: Nikon D40 Hello new1. You've already started being serious if you've bought a dslr.
Where you go from now will probably be dictated by finances!!
Lancashire lad has good advise (as always )
The only thing I can add is what I usually say - if you want to capture wildlife rule Number 1 , 2 and 3 is - get close!! Field craft and knowing your subject is all.

| | | Re: Nikon D40 Thanks everyone, I'll start saving. I got lots of photos of bees on my beans today, they're so fascinating. The deer obvoiusly know they are too far away to be properly photographed at the moment ... they have a tiny fawn with them and have been around all afternoon ! Bet they do a runner when I've got a new lense ! I feel a tripod coming on ... |

| | | Re: Nikon D40 I use the Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm lens on my D60 and it is a very good and versatile lens for about £150. For a little bit more there is a very good Sigma 70-300 APO with macro (200-300mm) included .
