| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups A little, but not enough to stop me hand-holding. Bruce Williams is also using a Nikon D300 with the SB-R200s and I think he usually hand-holds too.
I've just checked the spec in the manual and it says that each flash unit weighs "Approx. 120g (4.2 oz.)" so with three of them and the mounting ring it's a total of maybe 400g (13 oz.).

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups I very often just use a single SB200, vertical, 12 o'clock - and it works well for many subjects. A lot of very good macro shots are taken with a single flash very close to the lens and subject. If I think I need a second, it is very easy and quick to clip on another.

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups this is my low budget macro set up:
fujifilm S9600, raynox DCR 250, manfrotto modo tripod, a fuji RR-80 remote release and my dads old nissin flash gun. (I dont often use the flash as it means i have to estimate the exposure manually and i get it wrong too often ) |

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups Just confirming Dave's (pressld2) comment:
I always hand-hold in the field using either:
Nikon D300 + Nikon 105mm VR macro lens + 36mm Kenko extension + Nikon SB-R1 flash unit (with 2xSB-R200's). Flashes mounted at approximately 11 o'clock and 2 o'clock with 2 o'clock at about 50% power of 11 o'clock). I don't find weight a problem when shooting but it is quite a lump to carry around.
or
Nikon D300 + Nikon 105mm VR macro lens using the pop-up flash (manual 1/250s). I use this very simple set-up if I know I'm going to be covering some distance or plan to photograph mainly larger subjects (say >0.10mm).

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups Bruce, you've just got to remember to shift from Commander to TTL mode when changing over! I often forget.

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups Mick - I use manual flash with the pop-up but your point still applies - and I've done it too (more than once) .
Several near black images before realising my mistake .

| | | Re: Photos of your macro setups I really enjoy using the d300 r1 with 105vr set up it fits easily in a small domke bag.Usually using diffuser on one flashgun to avoid double catchlights .So much neater than the rig I tried to set up using loads of connectors/wires etc on the old Olympus I had.
Can use the 1.7 conv sometimes .Handheld most times but prefer the detail if lucky enough to be able to use tripod .Can concur with forgeting to switch to commander mode , the other thing I often do is to forget to switch on both flashguns. On the D300 you have a can customise some instructions ,havn't forgotten the commander mode since adding this to the "my favourite" instruction page.
