I think you'll do well starting off with a bridge camera if you're brand new to photography. It's more forgiving than an SLR to learn on, but will still allow you access to the more advanced functions which you will need to get your head round for a DSLR. I think it's probably the best of both worlds for you at the moment

Just remember to push yourself with it adn keep experimenting - keep off the auto function and see what you can come up with

i recently wanted a decent camera and had the same sort of choice, and i went for the bridge. it is great, it lets me go all the way to 300mm (albeit not that sharp) and do macro, where i would have had to spend at least £700 to get that range with a cheaper DSLR

Thanks for all your comments guys, i just purchased the Panasonic DMC-FZ28 bridge cam. should be gettin it within the next few days and uploadin picks in the next few weeks!
