| | | Canon 2X TC Well I have ordered one a 2X TC, sold a lens and got half way there to buying one. I will struggle to make the other half, but hey your only here once, thats what I keep telling myself anyway. Not been out with the camera for a age, so I hope I get chance to use it. Brought from a UK online shop it was cheaper than the auction sites
Regards

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC But which lens? Too late to say anything now, but they only fit a small number of Canon lenses. Good for most of the primes and will fit the 100-400 zoom but not a lot else.
I assume you have done the homework first.
A little while ago I was advised that I could use a Canon 1.4x with my 70-300 if I also used a 12mm extension tube as a spacer. Well, it worked but I wasn't happy with the results so that piece of kit just sits in the box now! |

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC I real Just want a bit more Reach to take Photos of Peregrines this year.
Its main use is with a 300mm lens. Had a few minutes spare and tried it at the local park and i am quite happy with the results all free hand shots. Will give it a good test tomorrow hopefully.

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC The 300 is a good lens. I had considered going down that route myself but eventually went for the Sigma 150-500 to have a bit more variability but still wonder if I made the correct choice. If the 400 had IS that is the alternative which I would have chosen. |

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC Peregrines Did get out today a little latter than I had hoped. And it turn a bit over cast but could have been worse. The lens/camera seems to need a different set up. But I reckon it will bring the subjects that bit closer. One problem holding
The camera steady pointing up at the Catherdral and keeping it steady on the peregrines. Next stop may be a tripod, but that will have to wait Got a shot of the tiercel flying but could have done with being closer. But all in all very happy.

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC Certainly some interesting shots there, Colin. I think the only real problem that you have encountered is subject movement and the only way around that is a higher shutter speed. But that can only be obtained if you sacriface aperture, and depth of field or increase the ISO, you could probably get away with upto 800 here. And of course a good sunny day really does make a difference.
A tripod would help with low light photos and a converter does reduce the light a bit but on the down side, it makes those quick response flying shots a lot more difficult.
You may also find that auto focus becomes erratic in poor light. |

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC But this way Geoff I certainly tested the IS. It would become really hard for me without it.

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC Had a few minutes spare this afternoon, I wanted to practice some flight shots with my set up. But the sun went in as soon as I went out, so instead of trying for flight shots of the local ducks and getting disapointed I had a walk round, and caught this chap out in a field.

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC You mention that the canon 2x ext. works ok with the canon 100-400. I have both but can't get it to work satisfactorily. Mine is the 100-400IS. Do you mean in manual or auto? Read an article by a 'pro' who says you can 'fool' a canon such as the 10d, 20d or 30d by putting a thin strip of ins. tape over the 3 left hand side pins on the lens side of the converter. He reckons that trying this with the sigma 500 and a 1.4 converter, the amount of light reduction is minor and auto focus still very good. Any experience of this? |

| | | Re: Canon 2X TC Really pleased with the 2 X TC. It has given me a 600mm lens at 5.6. And I am more confident at taking photos at distance. Although these are not frame fillers, It should give me the opportunity of hopefully, latter getting some action shots.
