Whoops - I've just noticed the thread discusses the _Canon_ 40D!
Hmm 40D/D40 - Canon/Nikon - confusing!
Jim | Thanks, Jim
I just followed the link and was then also confused!

| | | Re: Canon 30D update i have the 40d and the 50d and in my opinion the 50d is a better camera
most of the reviews you read about the 50d was done with the early models before the firmware upgrade was released to remedy the noise issue and the comunication error
when they are talking about detail difference between the 40d/50d i can tell you hands down the 50d wins but i have to say it does lose out on high iso noise compared to the 40d i find noise is kept to a very sensible level upto 600 iso and 800 at a push above that and it's quite noticable
it's quite an achievment to cram so many pixels onto a cropped sensor and keep the levels as low as they do to be honest if you think about it a full frame sensor with the same pixel density would be around 40mpx allmost twice that of a 1d mk111 |

| | | Re: Canon 30D update I'm in my first week of owning a 40D and so far I'm mightly impressed. I would much rather have fewer pixels and less noise at the higher ISO settings. That's what attracted me to it in the first place. |

did you do a comparison between the 40d and 50d for noise levels before you made the purchase ?
because the reality is it isn't that much when your not pixel peeping
i like both cameras but for shooting wildlife i prefere the 50d i don't tend to push the iso levels above 500 iso so it isn't really a problem
we can't allways get as close to the subject even with a 500mm lens as we would like so the extra pixel count can come in handy
the handling of the both cameras is identical so there's no issues there
the 40d is an excellent camera but i wouldn't rule out the 50d so quickly there both good in their own right
the reality is if you want high iso noise free photo's then reluctantly have to say it's nikon all the way and thats coming from a loyal canon user
iv'e seen photo's shot at 1000 and 1600 iso from a nikon d3 noise free makes me "almost" green with envy
enjoy your camera it's a good choice |

| | | Re: Canon 30D update I have decided to hang on to my 30D for the time being. The prices have risen as we all know. I would imagine that Canon and other Japanese manufacturers are really feeling the pinch, hence all the car offers and reports that Japanese manufacturing output has dropped a huge amount. I therefore hope that there will be a new cash back offer before not too long as apparently cameras are al;so not selling at the moment. The nature of any offers might help me make up my mind. Also, I am 21 or so in May and who knows what might emerge in terms of contributions.
