| | | EOS 40D lens lock I've had my 40D for nearly a year now but I have only just noticed that my lenses have a slight amount of play when connected to the camera.
I have checked 3 lenses and each one slightly rotates when locked on to the camera body.
Is this normal or should I return it for a warranty repair?
Many thanks

Alan | Perfectly normal Alan, most Canon DSLR's have this slight amount of play, its nothing to worry about at all. |

| | | Re: EOS 40D lens lock I've noticed exactly the same thing Alan, perhaps 2mm of play max? Noticeable more with my larger lenses, maybe something to do with the weight of the lens pulling on the mount?
For a while I blamed that play for my images which at the time seemed very grey with a lack of contrast- I thought the play was letting light in. I wasn't convinced though, so I still have my suspicions, but I don't really know.

| | | Re: EOS 40D lens lock Thanks Steve, but doesn't the play affect the IQ - I only noticed this when I mounted my new 300 prime using the collar mount and realised that although everything was stable the camera body slightly moved when I was taking the shot! |

Nick | Hi Nick - yes probably about 2mm and more noticeable with the larger lens.
Guess I'll have to find another excuse for my sometimes poor IQ |

| | | Re: EOS 40D lens lock Both my DSLR bodies have this play in the mount and everyone else that I know who has a Canon has the same.
I noticed it in my 20D shortly after buying it, that was three years ago and its never got worse and the images are still fine.
I think you will find that it is just a tolerance factor in the engineering process, it would be almost impossible for it to fit as tight as a drum, you have to allow for contraction and expansion caused by varying temperatures. |
