I'm quite enjoying using the 20D. It's still a fine camera. |

I had a 40D for just over 5 months now and I must admit my AF isn't as reliable as I would like.
However I'm currently putting this down to the lense not being the best in the world.
Could it be your lense ?????

Ed | I've tried it with both my Bigma and my Canon 3000mm F4 both with and without the TC. It will eventually find the subject but often far too late.
One day last week was the most galling. Very good light, contrasty subject against a blue sky. I saw the bird (Greylag Goose) flying straight towards me, got it well in the centre from along distance and kept it there the entire time. I took a dozen shots of it, and only one was in focus. If the subject is off centre then there's no problem, it will track nicely. |

No wonder you have trouble focussing on birds in flight - I'm surprised you can even lift it
