Have this lense in mind
AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Vibration Compensation) LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Is, Canon Fit, is there a digital compatible 2x converter, all linking up with Canon 40D

| | | Re: 2x converter for Tamron I'm not familar with that lens although I once had the Sigma version.
Converters need to be used with care and the x2 models should only be used with really good quality lenses. With most lenses you can get better results with a x1.4, but even then you still need a fairly good lens to get acceptable results. I certainly wouldn't have used one with my Sigma 28-300.
Beware of the Canon converters which have a protruding front that will not fit most lenses. They are only acceptable to a limited range of Canon lenses. There are other third party converters like Kenko who make converters to fit other camera makes, and I think Tamron do one as well.
If so, you may be able to get a Tamron converter to fit Canon which would be the easiest route. There are adaption rings etc but I wouldn't recommend them.
However, I'm not saying that it will give top notch results with your lens and there are other potential drawbacks. You will probably lose autofocus and quite a lot of light so it may not be the answer for which you are searching.
Possibly, trying to get closer to the subject or saving for a bigger lens may work out a better bet in the long run.
