Backup Software

Can anyone recommend a good software program for backing up my hard drive (documents & settings) to an external drive on a fairly regular basis.
I have a Lacie 250GB external drive and have been using the Lacie back up software program that came with the drive. The problem I am having is that when I do a new backup it creates a new back up file on the external drive each time and now that I have 160GB on my internal drive I have to first delete the previous backup file on the external drive or there is insufficient capacity to complete the new backup. I don't seem to be able to overwrite the previous back up.
What I am looking for is a simple to use stand alone software program that will only back up files that have changed since the last backup and overwrite the previous backup files on the external drive i.e. leaving me with just the one back up file. This should then resolve the capacity problem on the external drive.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
