I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend some serious money on some top quality camera equipment - lucky me! I want to buy a Canon 500mm F4 and the necessary upgrade to my tripod/tripod head etc. The cheapest I have seen new is just under £4k but I want to try and buy a decent secondhand version if I can. I have checked ebay and there is only one for sale - does anyone else have any advice on where I can look?

Try Ffordes Photographic, they have an excellent range of used equipment. 
They don't have a 500mm but have a Canon 400mm F2.8 L USM MkII for £3,199.00 https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm

Have a look here Second hand photographic eqipment, second hand camera gear
I used to have one of these and if you look hard enough there are always some second hand, surrey photography have one for £3400, which to be honest is way above second hand price.
When I sold mine I got £2900 for it, my friend just sold a mint one for £2300, so look around.

I bought a secondhand Nikon D100 from Mifsuds in Torbay and they also do a good line in secondhand Cannon bodies and lenses www.mifsuds.com

I paid £3400 for one earlier this year. I got it from Ian Kerr, who has a shop on Ebay. You probably won't see one for sale in his Ebay shop but if you email him ask for a price he should give you a quote.
His shop is called Flash Cameras. If you have any trouble contacting him I can pm you his email address if you like.
[Edit] Sorry I missed the 2nd-hand bit! Might still be worth checking though if the 2nd-hand prices are high at the moment. I looked before I bought mine in February and the cheapest was about £2800ish.
