| | Digital slr on a budget? Is it possible to buy a decent digital slr for under £200? I'd like to get my hubby one but have no idea what to look for in a camera and the ones that I've seen have been way over budget.
Any advice would be much appreaciated. |

| | | Re: Digital slr on a budget? The entry level models are getting cheaper (and higher specced) all the time but I don't think any have dipped below £200 yet, at least not with a lens included. The Nikon D60 kit with an 18-55 lens is £335 at the moment. You might get it a bit cheaper if you shop around but probably not much.
Your best bet is probably the second hand market. There are a number of companies that specialise in second hand and re-conditioned kit and you can get some real bargains there.

A DSLR may be cheap because whilst it may have a well specified body, it may have a very poor lens. As image quality is 99% down to the lens, the camera may produce very dissapointing results - and your husband will soon end up looking for a better lens to replace it.

| | | Re: Digital slr on a budget? As Dave said as far as I am aware there isn't a DSLR of any make that you can get new for £200 even for the body only.
The entry level DSLR's are quite capable of taking excellent photographs matched with the right lens and this needs to be budgeted for as well.

The replacement to my camera (a100) is the a200.. here it is with 2 sony lenses (konica minolta). These prices are annoying considering what i paid for mine, but i'm sure alot of us can relate to that when it comes to cameras!!! Sony | Alpha DSLR-A200 SLR Digital Camera with Sony | DSLRA200W

| | | Re: Digital slr on a budget? Hi wilddawn,
I'm afraid that you won't be able to get a (new) DSLR c/w lens for £200 at the moment.
You might pick up a reasonable secondhand Nikon D70, (or similar), but you still have the problem of additional lenses that will be needed.
If your husband is really keen on photography, then to get DSLR equipmemnt would mean (realistically), as a minimum, doubling that budget. (Taking into account memory cards etc.etc.).
At £200.00, your options are severely limited, even in respect to Bridge cameras - which I would personally recommend, if your hubby isn't an out-and-out photography enthusiast/hobbyist.
If you can find one anywhere, the Fuji Finepix S9600 bridge camera can now be had (new) for about £175.00, It was well over £400.00 when it first appeared. (I'd say it would be well worth a "Google", to check the spec & availability).
It's a 9-megapixel camera, c/w a lens that gives (effectively) 28mm-300mm optical zoom, plus macro & supermacro, It has all the usual auto, manual, aperture & shutter priority modes etc.etc.
I still use one as a second camera, and the specification and end results are more than acceptable - but, such cameras are stand-alone pieces of equipment, and not the basis of a system.
Best of luck with your search.
Mike.

| | | Re: Digital slr on a budget? Worth looking at s/h , I recently sold a Sony A200 for £150 ( body ) , but many Minolta lens are available .
Some supermarkets Sainsburys I think were recently selling the Canon DSLR ( unsure of model maybe 400D ) for £199 with kit lens but they soon went at that price. |

| | Re: Digital slr on a budget? Lots of very usefull advice, thank you.
I'm not sure why he specificaly wants a dslr and I dont have a clue about cameras. I know that he wants a camera with a zoom and macro for wildlife shots, he likes to take landscape pictures and pics of running water are a fav too!
He's just been made redundant so I can't really go over budget, I was streatching myself to get him something for Christmas/birthday. With any luck he'll get a new job quickly and he can use the redundancy pay to treat himself! |
