Gerry | O.K. this is the bright side, I have recieved, today, the estimate for repair to my Canon 430 EX flash, bearing in mind that this equipment has never been subjected to abuse or adverse conditions and is less then two years old and ,at an educated guess , has been fired approx. 300 times from new. £91.63 I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Keith. | A bit of a dilemma Keith, do you pay £91 for the repair which comes with a 6month gaurantee on the work or do you pay the £169 for a new Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash with a 1 year full warranty. Of course you could always buy a new third party flash which may well prove to be the cheaper option.

Gerry | As you say Gerry, a bit of a dilemma, of course I could always carry on using the old Metz 402 and be free of worry, as I can manage without ettl 2, which is just a bit of idleness really. With regard to buying a third party alternative, I also have a Sigma 500 EX DG unit which gave up the ghost a few weeks ago and which I hardly dare send in for estimate, I can only stand so many shocks in a given time period or I start to throw my rattle out of the cot. I have reached the conclusion that all this high tec. modern gear is OK so long as you dont actually want to use it

| | | Re: Canon Quality Control I was going to upgrade my 20D for a 40D and buy a 5Dmk2 into the bargain to - however i dont think i'll bother.
After all the ho ha with the 1Dmk3 and now problems with the 40D I have no confidence that the 5Dmk2 will be a good buy either.
As my long lens is reaching the end of its useful life I am quite tempted to follow mr rouse over to nikon and get either a D300 or a Fuji S5 plus a sigma 150-500 in nikon fit (of course with a wedding on the horizon i might not have the dosher but hey..).

I've been using Canon equipment for the last 40 years and I can honestly say I've never had a problem with their equipment. I use both still and video in the past 16mm cine all Canon. Never have I had to return any equipment for repair other than last year I sent back my 100-400 I dropped it on rocks while filming in Shetland. It was returned to me within 10 days. I will admit I do have professional status with Canon.
One can only speak as one finds.

| | | Re: Canon Quality Control You have my sympathy, cameras are like cars when they are working I think they are great but as soon as they let me down... their days are numbered.
My Canon gear has been very trustworthy, in fact I have dropped my 100-400 twice and had it repaired and it is fine. I have dropped my 20D a couple of times too but it is OK, I had a minor issue with it last week but I swore at it and threatened it with a 50D replacement and now it is OK. I have even updated the software on it. I hope you soon get your equipment back and in working order. If you wish for me to recommend a really good repair specialist I can do.
Jon
