| | | sigma 50-500- for a D80 Nikon I have just bought a new sigma lens for my d80 . I used it for the first time today, taking surf shots which I have done for many years. All the shots are blured! when viewing the subject through the view finder the image has been pinpoint clear but the end result is blured. |

Shutter speed, aperture, ISO settings, which mode you used for the shots. A sample image might be an even better idea, you can load them into the Archives and post them into this thread. |

| | | Re: sigma 50-500- for a D80 Nikon Unfortunately, your pic doesn't seem to have the exif detail intact, so it's difficult to tell what shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings the camera has used in sports mode.
I would say that the reason your pic is blurred is due to motion blur, this was possibly due to the shutter speed being too slow for the speed of your subject.

| | | Re: sigma 50-500- for a D80 Nikon Hello Jgchester this is definately camera shake due to the shutter being to slow ,were you hand holding also what shutter speed did you use and length of lens also did you use a tripod/momopod looking at pic doubtful.
The main consensus is to use a speed in relation that matchs the length of the lens that is if using the lens at 200mm then the shutter speed should be a minimum of 200sec 500mm then 500 sec any slower and if handheld then camera shake will occur due to the length of lens and its weight.
Good idea is to use a tripod/monopod for stability increase your shutter speed to match the length of lens if need be increase the iso to get the faster shutter speed.
Best of luck hope this helps

The details of the photo are as follows:-
Shutter speed 1/50
Aperture 6.3
Focal length 500mm
ISO 100
I took the picture using a tripod. I know how I am suppose to change the ISO , Appeture and shutter speed and have red the handbook, I dont seem to be able to increase the shutter speed and increase the appeture,. Can anyone help me with this problem? IS the lens capable of taking the shots that I want ie clear action surf / out door pictures? |

| | | Re: sigma 50-500- for a D80 Nikon Hi Jgchester,
The details you've posted confirm that the shutter speed was too slow for such a fast moving subject.
Your lens is capable of taking the action shots you want, however sometimes we're constrained by the light conditions we're trying to shoot in.
You could try increasing your ISO setting as this will increase your shutter speed.
Personally, I find I get best results from my Sigma 50-500 when I use it below it's full extension length.
You may also find that it takes a bit of practice to get the pics you want, panning with such a large lens, to capture such a fast moving subject, isn't an easy thing to do.
I hope this helps.

You need a shutter speed probably of 1/1000 sec - ie. 20 times the one you used! Increase the iso setting to the highest the camera can go. Set the camera to aperture priority and the lens to one stop less than the maximum, and see if that hikes the shutter speed up to 1/1000 or so. If the shutter speed is much higher, you can then afford to stop the lens down a bit more.
